Ladybugs are special little beings, and are well known due to their vibrant and distinctive appearance. However, what is less well known is the origin of their name. Ladybugs are loved by farmers and gardeners alike for their ability to keep away other pests from their crops and plants. The story goes that in The Middle Ages, a large swarm of insects descended on Europe, attacking the crops and threatening the people with starvation. After praying to the Virgin Mary for some restbite from these pests, a cloud of red, black spotted beetles arrived and began to eat the harmful insects, halting the eradication of the farmers crops. Seeing them as sent from the heavens, the little beetle was named 'Our Lady's Beetle' which then evolved to the name we call them now.
